The FIP held a virtual meeting to discuss the execution of the second scientific campaign of giant squid (OPERACIÓN CALAMAR GIGANTE II); IMARPE relayed that they plan to collect data on the estimation of lost squid jigs. 

In response to the FIP's request for information, IMARPE communicated that IMARSIS, a database management system, is under development to handle information for institutional use.

Decree No. 000222-2024-PRODUCE published which establishes 499,683 tons as the annual catch quota for the year 2024.

CAPECAL and SONAPESCAL representatives jointly presented a proposal to update the Fisheries Management Regulation (ROP) for squid. The proposal details that the IMARSIS database manager is currently under development for institutional use, with various applications being developed for internal and external use. A pilot of the iMARPESCA-Patrones application showed low registration during the "Operación Calamar Gigante I" survey, and further development is planned for "Operación Calamar Gigante II" with expected broader adoption through partnerships.

An update report on the formalization of vessels has been made available; 97% of the vessels have a registration certificate, 95% have a health protocol and 91% have obtained their fishing permits. 84% of the Cooperative Regime vessels have a registration certificate, 63% have a health protocol, and 67% of vessels have obtained their fishing permits

A report on biological, fishery and population indcators of the giant squid was published; the report includes fishing prospects for 2024. 

The Evaluation Directorate of the Ministry of Production has issued the first draft of the follow-up report on the POTA ROP; the report outlines that compliance with the provisions established in the ROP has been achieved by 50%.

The FIP attended the 11th meeting of the SPRFMO scientific committee meeting. At the meeting, Peru presented data on squid size range and natural mortality. 

PRODUCE has signed an agreement with WWF to promote interoperability between SITRAPESCA and TRAZAPP in an effort to establish an alternative system for data recording. 

RM 00253-2023-PRODUCE issued which increased the fishing quota to 581,000 tons from 500,000 tons in June 2023, therefore closing the quota for the year. 

The FIP has provided information about the status of the stock between January 2023- July 2023; the findings provided indicate that the giant squid population is not undergoing exploitation. 

The FIP conducted a research expedition and the results have been published in a technical report; the study found the giant squid to have a low presence in the examined area, with higher CPUE values in the northern zone decreasing towards the central zone and significantly lower values in the southern zone.

Decree No. 003-2023 was issued establishing the end of the formalization of vessels under the cooperative; fishing authorities will continue processing fishing permit requests under SIFORPA II.

The FIP conducted a research cruise on jumbo flying squid along the Peruvian coast in May 2023; 12 artisanal fishing vessels collected samples which were ultimately sent out for lab analysis. The samples are currently being prepared for genetic evaluations. 

Skippers conducted a trial of using the TrazAp during a research cruise; the recorded data from the trial has been made available

The FIP is in the process of renewing fishing permits for existing permit holders before the permits expire at the end of 2023. 

Throughout 2022, the FIP has conducted 5 workshops for artisanal fishermen on the use of the TrazApp e-logbook system. Currently, 34 vessels have produced 97 TrazApp reports

Fishery monitoring data from 2015-2019 has been collected and consolidated into a presentation; the data shows that increased observer coverage is needed and Peru has submitted an alternative observer program for the artisanal fleet

The fleet formalization process continues to progress; there are 1448 artisanal fishing vessels that have obtained a fishing permit and currently, 42% of total vessels have been formalized

CAPECAL and IMARPE have signed a collaborative research agreement; the agreement aims to develop a sample donation program that will contribute to population and genetic information

The FIP is developing a ROP to modify the current fishing regulations for squid

Formalization process is still ongoing; vessel percentage enrollment is high. Registrations will likely be completed by 2022. 

The TrazApp is continually being updated; Since it's implementation, the most recent data provided shows that approximately 70,000 ton of jumbo squid have been registered by 180 fishers to date. 

The project submitted for PRODUCE's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Program was successfully approved 

PRODUCE launched the platform pescaformal.pe this platform seeks to advise fishers in the formalization process in the SIFORPA II and COOPERATIVAS models

WWF sent a proposal to PRODUCE for the creation of a sectoral working group to strengthen the governance of the fishing and aquaculture sector

CMM 16-2021 and CMM 18-2020 have been introduced for review; these CMMs will establish management measures for the jumbo squid fishery and will aim to establish an observer program.

Law No. 31749 amends Decree Law 25977 (General Fisheries Law) by introducing articles 9-A and 12-A. Article 9-A introduces the classification of "overexploited" and Article 12-A mandates PRODUCE to establish BRP for fisheries and that total catch quotas must align with these BRP.
